Painting in my work operates as a field of perception shaped through attention, memory, and place.
Through line, layering, and repetition, each work unfolds as a continuous structure in which individual moments accumulate and transform.
This approach extends across contexts, applying artistic thinking to how perception is formed, navigated, and used.
PORTALS is a new series by Olga Hilgers exploring thresholds, presence, and transformation through painting. Each work functions not as representation, but as a space of shift. Through layered color fields and luminous centers, the paintings evoke the sensation of entering a passage — a moment where perception changes and new possibilities begin to emerge.

Bio
Olga Hilgers is a Berlin-based contemporary artist working primarily with painting. Her practice investigates connection, continuity, and relational presence as structural conditions of human experience.
Through line, layered material, and repetition, she approaches painting as a site of contact rather than expression — a space in which time, memory, and lived experience intersect. Her work explores how individual moments are situated within larger relational and temporal frameworks, emphasizing process, attentiveness, and continuity across bodies of work.
Artist Statement
My practice examines how human experience is structured and transmitted across time, place, and memory. Working primarily with painting, I approach the medium not as a vehicle for expression, but as a site of contact — where material processes, perception, and lived experience converge.
Line functions as a central organizing element within my work. Through layering, repetition, and accumulation, line operates as a connective structure that binds fragments of experience into extended continuities. These processes allow each work to hold multiple temporalities simultaneously, situating individual moments within broader relational fields.
Rather than representing narratives, my practice constructs fields of relation in which presence, absence, and transition coexist. Meaning is not pre-determined, but emerges through sustained engagement between the work, the viewer, and the conditions of perception. Across my work, continuity and attentiveness serve as structural principles, enabling painting to function as an open, relational system rather than a fixed or illustrative statement.
