Bio

Olga Hilgers is a Berlin-based contemporary artist whose paintings explore connection, continuity, and transformation. Working through line, layered material, repetition, and recurring circular forms, she creates visual structures in which individual marks become part of larger relational fields.

Born in Ukraine, Hilgers studied economics and spent a decade working internationally before committing fully to her artistic practice. Her experience across Germany, China, and Mexico informs an ongoing interest in movement, cultural transition, memory, and the structures through which human experience acquires meaning.

Artist Statement

My work begins with the question of how separate elements become connected: how a line creates continuity, how repetition accumulates into structure, and how individual moments remain present within a larger whole.

I work primarily through painting, using layered material, recurring marks, circular forms, and shifts in density and colour. These elements are not illustrations of a predetermined narrative. They create fields of tension, passage, and relation in which presence and absence can coexist.

Time enters the work through its making. Marks are applied, obscured, repeated, and recovered, allowing several stages of the painting to remain visible at once. Meaning emerges gradually through the encounter between material, memory, and the viewer’s attention.

Across different bodies of work, I return to connection not as sentiment, but as a precise structural condition: the distance between two points, the threshold between one state and another, and the continuity that holds difference without erasing it.
